Tref-y-Clawdd , the Welsh name for Knighton, translates as 'the town on the dyke', the dyke being Offa's Dyke of course. An important staging post for the drovers of days gone by, who moved huge numbers of livestock from Wales into England, it is now an important staging post for walkers and cyclists, being on the Offa's Dyke and Glyndwr's Way National Trails, and the Radnor Ring Cycle Route. The routes (from 9 to 33 miles) described in the guide have been chosen to follow the easiest gradients, with the shorter ones along valley bottoms, and longer more demanding ones over the hills.
